INDIANAPOLIS - While many of us see nothing but bargains at garage sales, police say criminals may see opportunities. "I never really realized," said Mandy Warren who is holding her garage sale all weekend at her home on the Southside of Indianapolis. We asked Sgt. Linda Jackson to take a look at her set up and she had a few recommendations: "maybe think about having the garage sale outside of your garage," said Sgt. Jackson. Police say by opening up your garage door homeowners are opening themselves up to theft, because they're leaving expensive items that they'd like to keep-- like golf clubs and power tools-- within easy reach. Police say instead of "garage sale," think "yard sale." "Don't bring people into your house. You don't ever want to invite anybody into your house. Keep that private. Keep that safe," said Sgt. Jackson. She says one of the worst things you can do is leave your garage door open and your interior door, unlocked or open because, if you get distracted by another customer, somebody could easily slip inside your home and steal something.
